Additional information for all camping safaris.
Please bring your own torch with adequate batteries. If you are visiting a location at higher altitude you will need your own sleeping bag and a warm jumper or jacket. Climbing Kilimanjaro requires special mountain equipment - please ask for advice.
We provide bottled drinking water on all our safaris.
All tents have in-built mosquito netting doors as well as normal zip doors, to prevent insects entering the sleeping compartments. These doors are only effective when fully closed.
On all camping safaris where there is the potential
of rain a tarpaulin or awning will be provided for protection.
Mobile Tented Camps
These are a step up from LWL camping. There is too much equipment for it to travel with you in the safari vehicle. Instead a truck travels in advance with a team of staff. They set up the camp before you arrive. These camps stay in the same place for at least several nights in a row, before being moved again. In locations such as Serengeti there are Mobile Tented Camps that follow the pattern of the migration, and they will often remain in the same location for several weeks at a time.
Equipment included:
- Large walk-in canvas tent with veranda
- Real beds with all bedding
- Ensuite toilet and shower
- Mess tent and lounge area
- Dining facilities as you would expect at a restaurant
- Lanterns and sometimes a generator
Permanent Tented Camps
These so called camps are effectively lodges, made mostly out of canvas. You get all the comforts of a lodge but with the added bonus of feeling part of the bush. They range from medium level all the way through to the super luxurious. Each tent is normally built on it's own raised wooden platform. You have a private balcony and modern ensuite bathroom facilities. The tents of the top end camps will be more like a hotel suite with a lounge area, writing desk, 24 hr electricity etc. There will be a well stocked bar, restaurant and lounge area, often a swimming pool and maybe a sundeck/star viewing platform.
Lodges
Lodges can be one building, with rooms aligned along a corridor like a hotel. Or, as is more often the case in Tanzania the lodges are bade up of many separate buildings. Bungalows or stone chalets are designed to accommodate two individual rooms, each with it's own modern bathroom. There will be a well stocked bar, restaurant and lounge area, often a swimming pool and maybe a sundeck/star viewing platform. Lodges usually have 24hr power supplied by generators.
