Birdwatching Itinerary

Itinerary breakdown:

Day 1 - Transfer by road to Mkomazi Game Reserve, quite a long drive with great scenery and a pleasant picnic lunch stop next to the Pangani River. Shortly after lunch you turn off the main road and traverse the South Pare Mountains to Zange Gate and into the Reserve. Camp will be set up overlooking the Dindera Dam, a good place to see animals drinking.

Day 2 - Begin the day with a walking safari, accompanied by an armed ranger. After lunch back at the camp you have the option of venturing out on a drive, or just relaxing by the Dam to watch the prolific birdlife.

Day 3 - Your guide and the ranger are very flexible, so you have the options of walking or driving safaris, depending on your preference. The Reserve is listed as an Important Bird Area, whilst the scenery is wild and dramatic. There is also very little chance of encountering any other tourists.

Day 4 - After a pleasant breakfast you will transfer to Mullers Mountain Lodge in the West Usambara Mountains, arriving in time for lunch. You will spend the afternoon exploring the trails around the lodge.

Day 5 - Magamba Forest Reserve lies on the slopes of the highest mountain in the West Usambaras, Mt Magamba. There are trails through the forest that offer particuarly good birding opportunities. You will spend the whole day out with a picnic lunch.

Day 6 - As you transfer to the East Usambaras the scenery is amazing, with the mountains looming up to the left and views of the Masai Steppe out to the right. You will arrive at Sigi Guesthouse at Amani Nature Reserve, in time for lunch. In the afternoon take a walk around the Botanical Garden and stop by at the Visitors Centre.

Day 7 - There is a whole day to explore this amazing reserve. Several walking trails offer good birding, some also visiting attractive waterfalls and sites where endemic African Violets are be found. The views from the Amani Peak are also worth a walk to reach.

Day 8 - After breakfast transfer back to DSM.

It is possible to extend this safari to include a couple of days in Saadani National Park, which offers excellent birdwatching and game viewing along the Wami River.
