Locations

Tanzania can be broadly divided into two main areas for safaris. These have been dubbed the Northern and Southern Circuits. The north is famous for parks like Serengeti and Ngorongoro, featured regularly in TV documentaries. The south is wilder and much less touristy, especially in parks like Selous and Ruaha where you get a real feeling of the vastness of the African bush.

In addition to these two classic big game safari circuits there is also the Western Circuit, famed for Gombe and Mahale parks, the home of Chimpanzee viewing.

It is possible to combine all three circuits in one incredible adventure. For this we would recommend allowing several weeks to really get the benefits of each unique location.

How do I know which locations will suit me?

Your personal safari agent has a wealth of experience and team knowledge. They will help you narrow down your choices and make the right decisions. There are a lot of factors to consider, ranging from the game viewing potential to the accommodation and activities available. So make sure you are completely open with your agent, and don't hesitate to ask a million questions - that's what your agent is there for!

Travelling between Locations

Getting form the north to the south, or visa-versa is very straightforward, but it will take all day if you go by road. Flights are offered by several different aviation companies and prices range from about $150-$250 per person each way.

Getting to and from the western region is less easy. There are regular scheduled flights but these can be very expensive, starting at $900 for a round trip (Arusha-Mahale-Katavi-Arusha). There are now flights available from Mwanza to Kigoma, and it's possible to fly from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma (both options starting at $150pp each way). But for those with time and a sense of adventure then travelling by train all the way across Tanzania is an amazing experience.
