The East coast of Zanzibar can be split into the North East and the South East. Both have unspoilt beaches and beautiful white sand then main difference is that the North is much busier and the hotels and beach resorts tend to be much closer together.
Famous pristine long white sand beaches such as Jambiani, Bwejuu and Paje are found on the East Coast. At several locations along the coast it is possible to go and have a traditional meal with a local family in their house. This is truly unspoilt Africa and well worth trying.
There is a long tidal reach on the East Coast of Zanzibar and often the sea tends to be quiet rough owing to the long fetch of the waves. There is excellent diving and snorkeling available from the East Coast, though one of the disadvantages is that, unlike the Northern Beaches you cannot swim at low tide. If swimming is important to you then we recommend that you select a hotel or a resort with a swimming pool.
Other activities such as visiting Jozani Forest, dhow cruises and spice tours are also possible from the east Coast. However most people tend to relax and stay on the beach when they get there
Food on the East Coast varies largely by resort, though the main emphasis is on fresh seafood. Local delicacies include octopus in coconut milk with a hint of spice.
