The Itete Mission was built by the Germans shortly after the turn of the century. Situated in idyllic surroundings overlooking the flood-plain, the mission provides a comfortable base with beautiful views. After waking to the pleasant sound of singing you will be in the center of truly unspoilt local culture in the middle of Itete village
A village tour allows you a glimps into the past as you see traditional crafts and farming methods unfold before you. Depending on the time of year you will see the stages of rice or maize production and the year round basket weaving industry.
There is the chance to visit and possibly donate to help the local primary school and orphanage. This village last year managed to send its first students to a university for the chance of higher education.
You will also be able to visit the local mission run dispensary which provides for all whether they have funds or not. There is a current project to improve the hospital facilities in this area - there is currently only 8 hospital beds for a ward of 7200 people - you can directly help by visiting this isolated community.
In addition to the aspects of the local village you will, if you stay for a couple of days, have the opportunity to go on walking safaris following elephant trails in the surrounding Miombo Woodland. For a cultural experience, there is the chance to go on a village tour and go for botanical walks with traditional healers.
Wild Things also cooperates with a remote subsistence farming community near Luvili. Here if you feel like some exercise you can help a single mother with her crops or perhaps have a look and help the homework of some of the many children. This is truly the edge of habitation with farms in the heart of the bush. It is a daily battle for existence with numerous animal incursions into the farms: baboons, buffalo and elephant in particular here.
In the evening after your meal you may wish to visit one of the local bars. Here colour means nothing and everyone is welcome. With you guide you may swap stories with some of the locals and come away richer.
Visitors to the Itete Mission are warmly welcomed, as all of the money paid for accommodation goes to maintaining the village dispensary - you may also want to visit the dispensary.
