Southern Circuit -> Uluguru Mountains -> Tegetero

Tegetero

Tegetero Village is high in the Uluguru Muontains which is part of the Eastern Arc Range. It has a pleasant climate and very welcoming people. There is also a mission in Tegetero village and a secondary school. The drive in is spectacular to say the least, and, as you drive alongside a rushing mountain river you may have the chance to see people panning for gold.

The Uluguru Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountain range. They have a high degree of endemism, particularly for birds and amphibians. If your Tanzania safari is trekking orientated then this is a location for you to visit. The mountains are very steep and this is only for recommended experienced walkers - unless you start at Tegetero or only wish to visit Morningside.

When you drive to Tegetero you arrive at well over 1000m in elevation. From here you trek, whilst enjoying totally spectacular views, into the nearby forest reserve. This is probably the highest quality forest left in the Uluguru Range.

For those clients who can get up early there is spectacular forest bird watching to be enjoyed in the Ulugurus. Some of the particular treats to see are : Loveridge's sunbird, the Uluguru Bush Shrike and Livingstone's Turaco.

Tegetaro is a good place to visit on the way to Selous from Udzungwa, Dar or Mikumi. It breaks the journey nicely and allows you to see a remarkable and different habitat from the typical savanas.

Tegetero is a quiet place to go on safari and relax in the forest. For more information on staying near to Tegetero, please contact us.

Accommodation

Forest Camping more info ->

Camping in the Uluguru Mountains is involves trekking deep into the spectacular forest reserves. There is a community run series of campsites. For practical logistical reasons only basic bush camping is available in these dramatic steep mountains. We recommend at least 2 nights to make this experience worthwhile.
