Tarangire Conservation Area is a sixty thousand acre area set aside by the local villages. The tarangire Conservation Area protects the main wet-season migration route into the neighbouring Tarangire National Park. The lodges in the area give a percentage of their income to the communities. The villagers use this revenue to construct waterpumps and boreholes, and to maintain the schools and dispensaries.
Because the Tarangire Conservation Area falls outside of the TANAPA's (Tanzania National Parks) authority, various activities other than the standard game drives are available for visitors on their Tanzania safari. These include night drives and walking safaris, which can be extremely exciting adn provide the opportunity to catch wildlife which would otherwise have fled.
