Saadani National Park is Tanzanias newest park, (gazetted in 2003) and the only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa with an Indian Ocean beach front. Inland of it's 20km coastline Saadani features a park-like cover of open grassland with stands of acacia trees and pockets of coastal thicket. The park supports a wide variety of large mammals, with game densities highest around January and February. Saadani harbours a small population of Roosevelts Sable (also found in Selous) and the red duiker is often seen. A myriad of birdlife is to be observed on a boat safari up the Wami River, as well as hippo and crocodile.
