Saadani is the closest National Park to both Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. It is unique in that it is Tanzania's only coastal National Park giving visitors the chance to see big game and bird life in a coastal setting.
Saadani National Park is Tanzania's newest park, (gazetted in 2003) and the only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa with an Indian Ocean beach front. Inland of it's 20km coastline Saadani features a park-like cover of open grassland with stands of Acacia trees and pockets of coastal thicket. The park supports a wide variety of large mammals, with game densities highest around January and February.
Saadani is home to a small population of Roosevelt's Sable (also found in Selous) and the red duiker is often seen. A myriad of bird life is to be observed on a boat safari up the Wami River, as well as hippo and crocodile.
There is a good choice of game viewing activities at Sadaani National Park: game drives, guided walks and boat safaris on the Wami River. In addition to game viewing you can swim in the Sea or visit Saadani fishing village, which lies within the reserve. Here you will sea some truly unspoilt culture and a collection of ruins that pays testament to Saadani's 19th century heyday as a major trading port.
We recommend Saadani for families and birdwatchers in particular. To get the most out of your visit we suggest 2 nights is the minimum length of stay.
