Prince Bernhard Waterfall

Prince Bernhard Waterfall is a medium sized waterfall just behind the National Park Headquarters. It was named after Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands who was the patron of WWF when the park was gazetted. The trail actually takes just 40 minutes to walk and so is well combined with another excursion. However note that you will be charged double the guide fee if you do this as the Udzungwa Mountains National Park somewhat bizzarly charge for the obligatory National Park guide on a per trip rather than per day basis.

The Prince Bernhardtrail is good for primate spotting, birding and also for butterflies. If you arrive in Udzungwa towards the end of the day it makes a good short hike around evening time.

The trail has several interesting medicinal plants and a poison arrow tree which your guide will explain to you. Prince Bernhard trail is very flat and you don't need to be at all fit to complete it (that is why Prince bernhard was taken here and not up to Sanje) so we recommend this trail to give elderly or infirm visitors a taste of the Udzungwa mountains without over exerting them.

Prince Bernhard falls is a good place to sit and have a forest picnic lunch before climbing up to Sanje in the afternoon. The chance of seeing active primates is however far greater in the morning so it is always worth a look as the troupes closest to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park Headquaters are significantly more habituated than those deeper in the forest.
