Outside Selous, Mtemere Gate

There are several lodges and campsite just outside the Selous Game Reserve by Mtemere Gate. For those on a tighter budget this is a good place to spend the some time when visiting Selous. For those on long trips a compromise between some time outside and some inside is a good cost effective option. Here the lodges outside the Selous Game Reserve are located on the banks of the Rufiji River affording excellent birdwatching.

For those on a tight budget, it is possible to go on game walks and boat safaris outside the Selous Game Reserve and still have a rewarding experience. The further away you get from the reserve the fewer animals are seen.

The lodges and campsites just outside the Mtemere gate have their game drives in the Eastern Selous so this area tends to be a bit busier than the rest of the Selous. The Eastern Selous is a typical Savannah matrix of shrubs, lakes, Acacia and Miombo woodland. It is an excellent location for bush camping in the reserve with outstanding wilderness in all directions. Camping can be in an official camping spot, or more luxuriously, "special camping" exclusively at selected locations. We suggest combining a lodge stay outtside the reserve with a bush camping experience within the reserve.

Jimbiza Lodge Selous is a mid range lodge with a budget campsite. It is located in the buffer zone of the Selous Game Reserve on the banks of the Rufiji River near Mloka Village. The Lodge is 4km from the Mtemere gate and airstrip.

Ndovu (elephant in northern KiSwahili) is a simple campsite offering fairly decent bathroom facilities with hot water. There are also kitchen and dining bandas to offer shade in the heat of the day. Beer and sodas are sometimes available.

The Selous Big 5 Lodge is a mid range lodge located 20 minutes drive (about 9km) from the Selous Game Reserves Mtemere gate. The lodge is set on the banks of Rufiji River and there is excellent birdwatching in the area

Hidden Paradise is set on a high bank of the Rufiji River and is simple yet luxurious. There are spectacular views from all the 12 accommodation units including some tented rooms in the tree-tops.

Mbega Camp is just outside the Selous (close to Mtemere Gate), making it a cheap option for a permanent tented camp. The tents are well proportioned set in riparian woodland fringing the river, and a tree house offers views over a small waterhole. A reasonable choice for those traveling on a budget.
