Currently Sable Mountain Lodge is the only lodge outside the reserve by the Northern Matambwe Gate of the Selous Game Reserve. It is a good mid priced option for those clients wishing to keep costs down. Sable is the only lodge serving the Selous Game Reserve that can arrange night drives outside in the buffer zone. For guests who are prepared to get up early it is also possible to catch a glimpse of the majestic Sable Antelope (from which the lodge takes its name). Local village tours are also possible for those looking to experience some raw unspoilt culture in the south of Tanznaia
This area is accessible by train to Fuga station(twice a week on TAZARA), car or plane. There are local guest houses in the villages nearby but we do not recommend these at all.
The Northern part of the Selous is a mixture of Miombo woodland, and open areas. Game is plentiful, especially near the lakes where there are numerous hippos and crocodiles on the lake shores amongst a high bird diversity. The lakes are formed by the meanders of the Rufigi River
This area of the Selous Game reserve is accessed by Matambwe Gate and is close to the Beho Beho Hills. This area makes for excellent game viewing, birdwatching safaris and visits to the grave os Frederick Courteney Selous. Because of the size of Selous we recommend that guests stay for a minimum of 3 nights. It is also possible to combine some time inside the reserve and some outside.
