Njokamoni Waterfall

The Njokamoni Waterfall is another superb forest location that can be reached on a day hike in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. The Njokamoni trail takes about 4 hours as a round trip (of course you are welcome to stay in the forest for longer) starts from the park headquarters. This trail is similar in length to the Sanje Waterfall trail except it is less popular with hikers and there is slightly more chance of seeing the endemic Sanje Crested Mangaby as there is a habituated troupe in this area.

The Njokamoni Waterfall is surrounded by excellent quality closed canopy tropical forest which is home to numerous butterflies, abundant bird and plant species as well as the endemic primates. For keen entemologists there are also a wide range of insects of all shapes, colours with varying toxicity! There is also the chance to learn from your guide about some of the traditional medicines found in the forest.

We recommend that hikers spend a night outside the park in Mang'ula before entering the forest as early in the morning a possible and hike quietly and slowly to Njokamoni Waterfall arriving in time for lunch. This will give the best chance of seeing the primates and numerous bird species that can be found en route.

Hikers do not need to be particularly fit to complete this trail though it is steep in places and can be humid under the canopy. The most important thing is to drink plenty of fluids on the way.
