The town of Moshi is near to Kilimanjaro International Airport and at the base of Africa's highest mountain. Moshi has a population of about 144,739 (2002 census).
Moshi is home to Chagga and Maasai tribes-people and lies on the east to west road linking Arusha and Mombasa in Kenya. Most people climbing Kili will spend at least one night here, otherwise this attractive but unremarkable town has little on offer, apart from the mountain view of course. For a greater choice of restaurants, accommodation selected in Moshi will be on a Bed & Breakfast basis only, unless you specify otherwise at the time of booking.
Because of Moshi's low altitude minimal rains, the majority of cultivation is on the higher slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro. Bananas and coffee do not grow well low down, so the outskirts of Moshi have large farms of maize and beans, grown once per year, during the rainy season.
Moshi was where Catholic missionaries introduced Arabica coffee seeds at the end of the 19th century.
Moshi is usually overlooked as a tourist destination, with many visitors preferring to stay in nearby Arusha. However the town is now host to the Kilimanjaro Marathon which is rapidly growing and there are new cultural tourism programs focused on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.
