The most alluring feature of Morogoro Town is the dramatic backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains. The climate is more agreeable than that of the coast, sometimes feeling quite cool in the evenings. There is quite a laid back atmosphere, even in the busy agriculture markets. There are a couple of decent restaurants in town. Most travelers who stop here do so because they plan to hike in the mountains.
Morogoro Town is located at the base of the Uluguru Mountains. It is the center of agriculture in the region of the same name. Sokoine University of Agriculture is based in the city. There is also number of missions that are based in the town, providing additional schools and hospitals. The town is the administrative headquarters of the Morogoro Region.
Morogoro enjoys the high rainfall and cool temperatures essential for the cultivation of rice, sugar cane and vegetables all year around. On the western plains of the region there is the Mikumi national park. In the colonial period the outskirts of Morogoro stretched for miles with sisal plantations (Sisal was then an export product before the bottom dropped out of the market with the advent of synthetic rope). Tanzania is the world's second largest sisal producer.
Morogoro lies in the agricultural heartland of Tanzania, and is a center of farming in the southern highlands. Tobacco is grown in the region and processed here before going on to the market. In addition to its agricultural importance, Morogoro is also the hub for much of the missionary work that goes on in Tanzania, and the various missions, missionary schools and hospitals are a highly visible feature of the town.
The nearby Uluguru mountains are famous for their ancient forests, which botanists estimate to be around 45 million years old which makes them amongst the oldest forests on the continent. These ancient forests support an incredible abundance of bird and insect life, as well as very diverse plant species.
