Mikeregembe Fishing Village

Mikeregembe is an idyllic fishing village situated one kilometer from the the border of the Selous Game Reserve. Its name refers to the particular type of rock found on the bottom of the river here which snags fish hooks! The local majority tribe is called the Wandamba, or people of the Valley. They are traditionally fishermen and rice farmers.

Here elephants sometimes walk through the village at night and there is a specially constructed observation platform in a tree to aid your safe viewing. There will be a village tour on which you will see traditional net making, mat and basket weaving and local brewing. There is also the option of a village operated canoe safari and the chance to experience completely authentic culture. There are few visitors to this remote village and it is important to be respectful on the inhabitants culture and belief.

You will stay overnight here and have the chance to see the traditional preparation of smoked fish and try some of the delicious fish from the Kilombero River . The camping fees are paid to the village council of Mikeregembe and go towards the village fund for maintaining a the pump for well (currently they have no clean drinking water some of the time because of this) and a emergency fund for getting sick people to the hospital. It is also hoped that enough funds can be generated to pay for a primary school classroom and teacher.
