Arusha Town

Arusha is a fairly large town, set in the heart of the fertile agricultural lands at the base of Mount Meru in northern Tanzania. Arusha is similar in appearance to many towns in East Africa, with old buildings left over from the colonial era alongside an increasing number of modern and contemporary buildings. Arusha is the traditional starting point for a northern circuit Tanzania Safari and as such has a busy and vibrant feel.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants and an increasing number of quality bars. There are also several nightclubs, though they may not be everyone's idea of a good night out! It is also possible to go out on a day trip to visit one of the recently developed cultural tourism programs.

The climate in Arusha is pleasantly cool and in the evenings you will need a fleece or jumper. Arusha makes a good base for visiting the nearby Arusha National Park and for going on cultural visits. As it has an airport it is also convenient for ongoing travel to Zanzibar or Dar.
