Considering its small size (137 sq km) Arusha National Park boasts a remarkable range of habitats - a miniature volcanic crater, highland rain forest, acacia woodland and a string of attractive lakes, as well as hosting Africa's fifth highest mountain, Meru. Also take into account Arusha National park's close proximity to Arusha Town and you can reasonably expect the park to be heaving with tourists. That is not the case however, and apart from Rubondo Island, Arusha National Park is the least visited park on the Northern Circuit.
The relative quietness can be attributed to the fact that the nearby Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater draw the biggest crowds, and have larger concentraions of animals and specifically more big cats than Arusha National Park. But for those who want to escape from the crowds this is a rewarding excursion - there are numerous elephant, giraffe, hyena and zebra throughout the park, as well as an astounding number of bird species. The rainforest areas are home to an indigenous group of black and white colobusd monkeys which can often be seen throwing themselves carelessly from tree to tree.
Ndurgoto Crater is worth the entrance fee alone, a fully intact 3km wide, 400m deep volcanic caldera often described as a mini-Ngorongoro. People are not permitted to enter the crater but the views from the rim are fantastic and the game can be spotted with binoculars.
The Momella Lakes are fed by underwater streams. These shallow alkaline lakes each has a slightly different mineral content, creating slightly different colours. This is also one of the best places to see water birds in Tanzania.
It is possible to visit the park as a day excursion from Arusha Town, making this national parka fantastic way to begin your Tanzania safari.
