Goat Races

Held annually in the Leader's Club in Dar es Salaam, the Goat Races were started in 2001 in Tanzania. The Dar es Salaam Goat Races are based on the original Goat Races, held in Uganda as a new way to raise charity funds. Last year, in August 2007, the Goat Races attracted 3500 people and raised over 50 million Tanzanian Shillings for a range of charities across Tanzania.

The Goat Races are held every summer between June and August and attract a wide range of Tanzanians and expatriates, who come for the fun of the races and have a real family day out. As part of the fun, there is also a fancy dress competition - anyone and everyone is encouraged to get their creative juices flowing and come up with the most original and outrageous outfits. There are some great prizes for the winners of the fancy dress competition! There are also a range of stalls around the grounds, giving the Dar es Salaam Goat Races an air of summer fete - food and drink stalls, betting stalls (of course you must pick your goat with care!), and game stalls to keep you busy between the goat racing.

When you are planning your Tanzania safari, watch this space for details! if you are passing through Dar es Salaam at the right time of year or you can arrange your safari to coincide with this unique and patently absurd event, we highly recommend you do so. The Dar es Salaam Goat Races are great fun, for young and old alike, and will make for a highly memorable, barely believable part of your personalised Tanzania safari!
